Numismatic lure costs big bucks on eBay

Here is an interesting comparison from Saturday. The link below was for 300 Mercury dimes in circulated condition, but with no special collector value. The final price of $267.22 (including S&H) was very close to the value of the silver in the dimes.

A few hours later, another auction for 300 Mercury dimes sold for $335.16, an increase in price of $68 which is 25% higher. So what is the difference? The listing below offers the hope and a prayer that those dimes may have some unspecified numismatic collectors items.

No wonder most eBay auctions say their coins are unsearched, even though the last ten owners of the coins couldnt find anything special in them! :D

I could see unsearched bags mayb ago 20 years but very unlikely these days, commonly you will see such and such dates throwen in with the bag.
Commondate silver there is millions around, however i read an interesting article about 3 or 4 years ago about Franklins and how since they were still relatively new and not much numi value and with the jump in silver many guys said they melted em like crazy.
On a personal note i find any seated dimes, halves and ofcourse Mercs very pretty coins.

The ebay community lacks common sense. This is nothing new. Yet, it's always amusing.

Here's an auction for the 20th anniversary SAE set (ungraded mind you) and the seller uses the same sort of tactics. This set sold for quite a bit more than any of the other exact same sets have recently.

642 dollars! They were 100 dollars a set in 2006 right?
Bet the person buying used the payment plan.

Yeah, I still have my 2 sets. I got one for X-mas and paid about $200 for the other set. I was happy with just the one set and it was a total shock that I even got it. But I still wanted to have a set to sell later. I wonder what they'll be selling for by next X-mas. $1,000 perhaps? I wouldn't be surprised.

Those sets are still a sore topic with me. I placed my order right on the cutoff day, Nov 17th. Some people who ordered that day got theirs and some not. I'm still beating myself up for not ordering a month earlier when RossL posted some pictures of the set showing how nice they were.

I remember last fall seeing those sets at the regular coin show I go to for close to 200 bucks. 3 ounces for 200 bucks? yeah right, what a rip, I would think to myself. Ain't that a kick in the head.

I can't compete with the idiots on eBay who bid prices up, so I won't try.

I laugh at the "unsearched" nonsense. Yeah, right. "I don't have 5 minutes to check if there are a few $1,000 coins in this 60-coin lot of junk silver!" Yeah, right. I'd really expect to get a gem out of an auction like that.

Same with the "You will get a random selection from (my choice) great coin A, good coin B, or worthless coin C." Yeah, I wonder what I'm getting, since you can give me the junk and say I technically got what I was promised.

I got screwed too, by my family. I was going to order one, and a family member said, no worries, I get that for you for Christmas. I got a very nice 1882 O Morgan dollar MS63 maybe 64. Very pretty coin, and I enjoy it.

Still. . .

TomD - as you know, you and I were in a similar situation.......I got one set at cost thru the incredible kindess of a GIM member.......I bought another three on Ebay at a huge markup knowing these sets were going to go up due to the very limited mintage.

At this point, according to PCGS's retail pricing, the set at MS69 is over $500....the reverse coin, the rarest, is listed at almost $1500 at PR 70.......

At the prices Ebay is selling them for now, I can't afford any more, but if I had the money, I think $1000 an ungraded set will happen in a couple of years..........it will be interesting to see.

I don't see the problem....capitalism throughout history has always rewarded those who walk an "ethical tightrope" when they market their product...no?

There is no problem, just that I am too slow or stupid or both to recognize a gift horse. We're all mad that we waited too late to order and jealous of the smart people making the big bucks. Fl Racing girl, I don't wanna hear a word out of you about your 10 sets..

yes "capitalism" has done that and "society" has strung them up when they went too far and crapped in the common water all had to drink.

todays "capitalists" are not a bunch of trust fund brats quoting Ayn Rand, they are those we call "globalists" like Paul Wolfowitz who is getting a small comeuppance over his girlfriend. Here's to hoping there's bigger comeuppances "right around the corner."

FYI -- I am seeing prices of 425 per for 20th anniv sets in the coin mags. have they topped? I doubt it-
